Clear explanations, attentive support
I taught for fourteen years at a university in China, working extensively on teaching and course design, which gave me a great deal of classroom experience. Those years in front of a class left me placing real weight on logic, structure and building up step by step, and made me used to explaining complicated things so that they become easy to follow.
Today I teach Chinese to children at the school. I pay close attention to how well the children understand and how they experience the lesson, and I like to work through questions, prompts and discussion to help them "see why" rather than memorise. I believe that only language built on understanding stays with you and can be used flexibly.
With children of different ages and different levels of Chinese, I always bring patience and respect. I adapt my teaching to the individual child and encourage them to speak up and express themselves with confidence, so that learning Chinese becomes both enjoyable and something to feel proud of.
Looking ahead, I want to combine years of teaching experience with a clear, methodical way of thinking, and keep looking for ways of teaching Chinese that suit children growing up abroad — so that in a calm, well-ordered environment they build a solid foundation in Chinese and good study habits, step by step.
